Deaconess Sandra Rhein — Sacred Music Educator — Serving the Lord in Asia

Deaconess Sandra Rhein

Serving the Lord in Asia

Bio

Deaconess Sandra Rhein serves The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) in Asia, based in Taiwan. In her role as a sacred music educator, she responds to partner church needs and requests for Lutheran hymnals and hymnody and guides them in developing musical and liturgical resources. Her work promotes the proclamation of the Gospel using the highest forms of art available to the church. It combines God’s gift of music with His Word, allowing people to join the rich, historic worship practice of Christians throughout the centuries. Sandra is currently supervising partner-requested Lutheran hymnal projects in Chinese, Tamil, and Indonesian.

Further responding to requests from partners, Sandra is developing and implementing deaconess training to fit the needs of Lutheran churches in Asia. Sandra’s LCMS training and experience as a deaconess and musician serves well the many and varied partners of the LCMS throughout Asia.

Sandra’s hometown is South Bend, Ind. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Nebraska—Lincoln and a Master of Arts in theology, with deaconess certification, from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne. Before serving in Asia, she served as the organist, choir director and deaconess at Emmaus Lutheran Church, South Bend. Sandra’s hobbies include spending time with her grandchildren, baking and gardening.

Sandra’s husband, Robert, is an associate professor of music at Bethel University in Mishawaka, Ind. Sandra and Robert have four children — Pearl (married to Jordan), Naomi, Nathaniel (married to Sarah) and Maggie (married to Jonathan).

Prayers

Pray for Sandra as she serves in Taiwan and throughout Asia. Ask God to give her peace and strength as she continues to understand the culture and traditions and strives to acquire a stronger grasp of the language. Pray that God would open doors for the Gospel in Asia and that He would empower, through the Holy Spirit, those who hear it to believe and be saved. Ask God to speed forward the development of a churchly music culture in Asia, where music serves the Word of God and where Christ and His cross are at the center of it. Let us give thanks to God that Sandra is serving His children in this part of the world.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 13.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors. Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
