Rev. Dr. Carl and Chenhsi Hanson

Serving the Lord in South Korea

Bio

For more than 25 years, Rev. Dr. Carl Hanson has served as a missionary through The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) in Asia. Currently based in Seoul, South Korea, Rev. Dr. Hanson serves as the pastor of International Lutheran Church, a vibrant English-speaking ministry of both expat and local families living in the greater Seoul area.

After 12 years of ministry in Taiwan and 14 years in Hong Kong, Pastor Carl accepted the call to serve International Lutheran Church in May 2019. Pastor Carl notes, “After visiting South Korea once a year for the last 15 years and learning about the amazing miracles God is doing through His people in this place, this is truly a joy and blessing to work alongside this amazing congregation. We live in a global community with a unique opportunity to minister to and with people from across the world.”

Rev. Dr. Hanson received both his Master of Divinity (1996) and his Master of Sacred Theology (1998) from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. In May 2024, he completed his doctorate (Ph.D.) degree at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, through their Module Program in Doctrinal Theology.

Carl is married to Chenhsi and together they have three daughters, Emma, Andrea and Lydia. Chenhsi, a trained Chinese/English translator, is actively involved in the life and ministry of the congregation, especially in the Sunday School program, as well as the school where Lydia attends. Family hobbies include reading a good book together and enjoying a hike on one of the many hiking trails in the Seoul area.

Prayers

Pray for the Hansons as they serve in South Korea. Pray God grants them wisdom as they serve those in their congregation and in their local community. Pray that God gives them direction in starting new ministries, as well as strength in supporting ongoing ones. Let us give thanks to God for the Hanson’s continued service in this part of the world.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 13.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors. Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
