Support relief and mercy efforts for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico

The LCMS has two full-time disaster-response coordinators in Puerto Rico, and the Synod has contracted with a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Mayagüez to provide part-time assistance.

  • The LCMS response plan includes:

    1. Distributing food and items for families with young children (diapers, wipes, formula, etc.).

    2. Establishing mercy centers in Mayagüez and Ponce.

    3. Starting an English-as-a-Second-Language program.

    4. Starting a music outreach and training program for impoverished children and youth.

    5. Beginning a reroofing and home repair project.

Although the LCMS congregation in Puerto Rico is small, it has a mature core group of members as well as an excellent piece of property.

The Synod’s Latin America and the Caribbean region has been very supportive of recovery efforts, and the LCMS has designated $1.3 million to support the approved strategic plan.

Gustavo Maita is organizing the LCMS response in Puerto Rico, and he has requested that all financial donations be sent to LCMS Disaster Response.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Mayagüez is now accepting donated packages. Some of the most-needed items are diapers, wipes, white rice, and D and C batteries. United States Postal Service flat-rate boxes are usually the least expensive way to send items.

    Please mail packages to:

    Iglesia Luterana Príncipe de Paz
    Buzón 409 Bo. Rio Hondo
    Mayagüez, Puerto Rico 00680

Pray

Pray

Heavenly Father, many in Puerto Rico and other places cry out to You for help, echoing the Psalmist, “Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me!” We join their voices seeking Your mercy and deliverance in these times of need. Open avenues for aid and help to reach those who need it. Grant patience and provision to those who still seek relief. May all turn to You and find love and forgiveness in Jesus Christ Your Son, our Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 13.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors. Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
