Haiti Earthquake Relief

In January 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. It was the largest earthquake in the Caribbean nation in more than 200 years. More than 220,000 people died in the rubble and a year later an estimated one million remain homeless, living in make-shift camps.

Within a week of the earthquake, LCMS World Relief and Human Care (WR-HC) teams were on the ground providing medical assistance, food and supplies, needs assessment and spiritual care.  WR-HC’s generous donors responded with gifts exceeding $5 million for relief efforts.

As time passed, WR-HC’s focus expanded to include debris removal, improved sanitation at camps and rebuilding efforts. Building Homes and Hope in Haiti was launched with a goal to build hundreds of homes throughout Haiti in the next few years. WR-HC is also involved with efforts to prevent the spread of cholera in Haiti.

In 2011, the Synod’s mercy arm continues this work alongside the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti (ELCH) and the Lutheran Church of Haiti (LCH) to provide hope in Christ to Haitians impacted by the earthquake.
